As the seasons change, throat infections, mumps, and tonsillitis become increasingly common, especially among children. While modern medicine offers various treatments, there is profound wisdom and healing found in Tibb-e-Nabawi (Prophetic Medicine).
Over 1,400 years ago, the Prophet Muhammad (ļ·ŗ) guided his followers toward gentle, highly effective natural remedies for throat ailments, specifically warning against harsh physical practices of the time. Let’s explore the prophetic approach to treating throat infections using a miraculous natural root: Qust (Costus).
The Prophetic Guidance on Throat Illnesses
In pre-Islamic Arabia, when a child suffered from a swollen throat or “Udhra” (mumps or tonsillitis), mothers would physically press down or lift the uvula with their fingers. This was a painful process for the child.
The Prophet (ļ·ŗ) forbade this harsh practice, offering a far better and kinder alternative. It is narrated by Hazrat Anas (R.A) that the Messenger of Allah (ļ·ŗ) said:
“Among the treatments you use, the best treatment is cupping (Hijama) and using Sweet Costus (Qust-e-Shireen). And do not cause pain to your children due to throat illness by lifting the Uvula, meaning by pressing the palate.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5696)
Furthermore, in another beautiful narration highlighting his deep compassion, the Prophet (ļ·ŗ) visited Sayyidah Aisha (R.A) and saw a child with a bleeding nose. Upon learning the child was suffering from a throat infection, he (ļ·ŗ) gently reprimanded the women, saying:
“May good be upon you! Do not destroy your children. Any woman whose child complains of a throat infection or has a headache, she should take Bitter Costus (Qust-e-Talkh), rub it in water, and then drip it into his nose.” (Musnad Ahmad)
Following this prophetic prescription, the child was treated and fully recovered!
What is Qust (Costus)?
In the traditions, two main types of Costus root are mentioned for medicinal use:
- Qust-e-Shireen (Sweet Costus): Also known as Oud-e-Hindi (Indian Aloeswood). It is white in color, milder, and has a sweet taste.
- Qust-e-Talkh (Bitter Costus): Also known as Qust-e-Bahri or Sea Incense. It is typically brown or darker and carries a more pungent, bitter profile.
Both types act as powerful natural astringents. According to classical Islamic medical scholars, when Qust is administered, it helps reduce the swelling and sagging of the uvula, drawing it back to its natural place without the need for painful physical manipulation.
How to Administer Qust for Throat Infections
According to the classical texts and the Sunnah, the most effective way to treat a throat infection with Qust is through nasal drops (snuffing). Here is the traditional method:
- Prepare the Extract: Take the Qust root and rub or grind it down.
- Mix with Water: Knead the sifted powder and dissolve it in a little pure water. (Historically, some scholars like the author of Al-Qanun also suggested mixing it with alum or specific seeds depending on the severity).
- Position the Patient: Lay the patient down straight, placing a cushion between their shoulders so their head tilts backward.
- Administer: Carefully drip the water mixed with Qust into the nose.
Because of the tilted head position, the medicine travels straight toward the nasal cavity and the back of the throat. This often induces sneezing, which helps expel the phlegm and matter causing the illness, clearing the airways naturally.
A Compassionate Approach to Healing
One of the most beautiful aspects of Tibb-e-Nabawi is its holistic compassion. The Arabs of the Jahiliyyah (days of ignorance) tied throat infections to superstitions about a star named “Udhra,” hanging amulets on their children and subjecting them to painful throat pressing.
The Prophet (ļ·ŗ) abolished these superstitions. He replaced fear with faith, and pain with a simple, scientifically sound herbal remedy. As the Quran states: “It is heavy on him that you should suffer, he is anxious for your well-being, for the believers he is full of pity, merciful.” (At-Tawbah 9:128).
Disclaimer: While Tibb-e-Nabawi offers incredible natural remedies and spiritual blessings, it is always recommended to consult with a qualified healthcare professional or pediatrician when treating severe infections in children to ensure comprehensive care.
